Studying for the MCATs????
I am taking the MCATs in August (2008). I plan on taking a preparatory course (i.e. Princeton Review); however, this course would not begin until mid-May. I want to get started studying now. I have the majority of my basic science textbooks (organic chem/bio/physics/inorganic chem), all of my collegiate notebooks, and one of those bulky review books. Should I just begin going over all of the topics/sub-topics the MCAT covers? What’s the best way to get started so that when the preparatory course actually starts I can maximize my understanding of the concepts across different problematic surfaces? Advice is appreciated (preferably from those with experience). Thanks!
FWIW, I don’t think those prep courses are all that necessary. They are expensive, and all they really do is to give you a framework for review. If you’re willing to pay $1500-2000 to have a class to go to because you think that will encourage you to keep to a schedule, that’s fine, but just be aware that these classes are just review. They aren’t going to tell you any great secrets–what you need to know is all in the review book.
(I did not take a course but I used to teach for one of the major companies–NOT the one you cite. *g*)
Yes, what you need to do is to review the topics the MCAT covers, and you need to do practice exams. Again, you don’t have to go to a school. You can get access through the AAMC website to five or six of them for a minimal cost.
The biggest challenge to most students is actually not the science knowledge–it’s being able to read quickly and extract the main ideas accurately. The MCAT is much more about the verbal reasoning than anything else (I know no one believes that, but it’s true).
If you start looking at the practice questions, you will realize that a great deal of information is contained right there in either the question stem or in the passage. Remember that, whenever you think you’re not getting a question.
Do your review systematically and consistently, and you will do fine no matter what course you take or don’t take.
Good luck! And feel free to email me if you have any further questions.
